How many golfers are there in Switzerland? 108,543, and 43 percent of them play without a club
The federation counts cards, not people: 108,543 Swiss Golf Cards at the end of 2025, 47,177 of them without a club. The figures from the annual report 2025, what they mean, and why the directory counts 110 indoor venues where the federation names 29.

How many golfers are there in Switzerland? There is one counted figure, and it comes from the federation: at the end of 2025, 108,543 people held a Swiss Golf Card, according to the Swiss Golf annual report 2025. It counts cards, not people. Anyone who plays on a range or in a simulator without a card appears in no statistic. And at the indoor venues its statistics stop: the federation names 29, the directory counts 110.
How many golfers are there in Switzerland: what the federation counts
Swiss Golf counts the Swiss Golf Cards every year. The card carries your handicap, and it is issued by the 98 clubs or by one of the two organisations for golf without a club, ASGI and Migros GolfCard. The table on page 68 of the annual report 2025 counts 108,543 cards at the end of 2025: 61,366 in the clubs, 47,177 with ASGI and Migros GolfCard. What is possible without a card is in the post Golf without a licence and without a club.
On its website the federation gives the same figure rounded and without a date: over 108,000 licensed members, according to its Facts & Figures page. The figures here are the report's, because the report has a date: the end of 2025.
Women, men, juniors
The same table splits the 108,543 cards like this:
| Cards at the end of 2025 | In a club | Without a club | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adults | 56,136 | 45,524 | 101,660 |
| of them women | 20,925 | 14,837 | 35,762 |
| of them men | 35,211 | 30,687 | 65,898 |
| Juniors | 5,230 | 1,653 | 6,883 |
| All cards | 61,366 | 47,177 | 108,543 |
Women are therefore 35 percent of the adults. Their share is higher in the clubs than outside them: in the clubs, 20,925 of 56,136 adults are women, 37 percent, with ASGI and Migros GolfCard 14,837 of 45,524, 33 percent. Among the juniors, just under a third are girls. 5,230 of the 6,883 are in a club, 1,653 play through one of the two organisations. All of these figures are in the same table. How children start and what it costs is in the post Golf for children in Switzerland.
Golf without a club is growing: ASGI and Migros GolfCard
47,177 of the 108,543 cards run through the two public golf organisations, which is 43 percent. Migros GolfCard holds 27,113 cards, 1,009 of them for juniors, ASGI 20,064, 644 of them for juniors (annual report 2025, page 68). Both are associations of club-free players. Their membership allows play on almost every course in Switzerland, according to the Swiss Golf members page. The same page puts Migros GolfCard at over 26,000 members.
For the club-free adults the report gives both years, because the support programme Supporting Golf is calculated on their number: 42,552 for 2024, 18,319 of them with ASGI and 24,233 with Migros GolfCard (page 40), and 45,524 for 2025, 19,420 with ASGI and 26,104 with Migros GolfCard (page 68). That is 7 percent more in one year (annual report 2025).
In the same report, the organisations themselves give slightly higher figures. ASGI writes of more than 21,300 members at the end of 2025, including sign-ups for 2026. Migros GolfCard gives 27,145 members including juniors on 31 December 2025, 2,069 more than the year before, with over 2,000 newcomers who came in through the Platzreife and over 900 people who stopped, paused or moved abroad. Many do not stay club-free for good: since 1998 more than 60,000 members have joined ASGI, and more than 16,000 of them later moved to a club, while at Migros GolfCard just under 400 members moved to a club in 2025 (annual report 2025).
What has moved
A number on one date says little. The annual report also carries the movement behind it:
| Figure | Earlier | Today |
|---|---|---|
| Golf clubs in the federation | 28 in 1975, 72 in 2000 | 98, unchanged since 2017 |
| Adults without a club | 42,552 at the end of 2024 | 45,524 at the end of 2025, some 7 per cent more |
| ASGI, adults | 18,319 at the end of 2024 | 19,420 at the end of 2025 |
| Migros GolfCard, adults | 24,233 at the end of 2024 | 26,104 at the end of 2025 |
The direction is unambiguous: the number of clubs has stood still for eight years while the number of golfers without one grows. For many, being clubless is a stage rather than a destination. More than 60,000 people have joined the ASGI since 1998, and over 16,000 of them later moved into a club; at the Migros GolfCard it was just under 400 in 2025 (annual report 2025).
98 clubs, 35 ranges, 29 indoor facilities: what the federation counts
98 golf clubs are members of Swiss Golf, plus the two public golf organisations (members page). The number has stood since 2017: the chart of the sport's development since 1975 in the annual report 2025 shows 28 clubs for 1975, 72 for 2000 and 98 for every year since 2017. The federation's Facts & Figures page adds, without a date:
- 1,530 golf holes, rated under the USGA course rating guidelines
- 35 driving ranges in addition to the clubs' practice facilities
- 11 short courses
- 29 indoor facilities
- Around 28 as the average handicap index
- Around 390,000 individual scores a year in the central handicap system
- Around 250 tournaments a year organised by the federation
A handicap index of 28 roughly means 28 strokes over par on a course of average difficulty. The average is a long way from a single-figure handicap. How the index is calculated and how it comes down is in the post The golf handicap explained.
110 indoor venues: what the directory counts, and why the figures are not the same
At the indoor facilities the federation's statistics stop and the directory begins. On 18 September 2026 golfsimulators.ch lists 126 published venues: 110 indoor venues with a simulator and 16 driving ranges with ball-flight tracking, meaning TrackMan Range, Toptracer or Inrange. A range with tracking is listed as a driving range, never as indoor golf. The directory takes in every place where you can book simulator time. A simulator that only members can book is not listed. The figures on 18 September 2026:
- Cantons: venues in 21 of 26, none in Appenzell Innerrhoden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Nidwalden, Obwalden and Schwyz
- Most venues: Zurich 29, Vaud 12, Valais 12, Aargau 11, Graubünden 10, Bern 9, St. Gallen 8, Lucerne 7
- Bays: 102 of the 110 indoor venues state their number, 202 in total
- Systems: TrackMan at 83 venues, Toptracer 11, Foresight Sports 7, Uneekor 4, Full Swing 4, SkyTrak 3, TruGolf 3, Flightscope 2, ProTee 2, Golfzon 1
- Price: 80 of the 110 indoor venues publish an hourly rate, CHF 25 to 99 per bay, median CHF 50
- Coaching: 95 venues, group bookings 92
The systems, by number of venues:
| System | Venues |
|---|---|
| TrackMan | 83 |
| Toptracer | 11 |
| Foresight Sports | 7 |
| Uneekor | 4 |
| Full Swing | 4 |
| SkyTrak | 3 |
| TruGolf | 3 |
| Flightscope | 2 |
| ProTee | 2 |
| Golfzon | 1 |
A venue can run more than one system, which is why the total is larger than the number of venues. What separates the systems is in Radar or camera; which venue runs which is on the technology pages.
The federation names 29 indoor facilities, the directory 110. That is not a dispute over the right number but a question of what is counted. The federation's page does not say which 29 it means or when the figure dates from. The directory counts every venue on its own, with address and technology, whether it belongs to a club or not. How indoor golf grew this much in a few years is in the post TGL and the indoor golf boom.

What this means for the winter
47,177 golfers play without a club (annual report 2025). Anyone who wants to keep playing through the winter without a club finds their own training. The offer for that is in the directory: 110 indoor venues and 16 tracked ranges in 21 cantons. An hour in a bay costs a median CHF 50, and up to four people usually share the bay. 95 venues offer coaching (golfsimulators.ch). What else works in winter, from Ticino to the tracked range, is in the post Golf in winter in Switzerland. What an hour costs where is in the price guide.
The next step is a look at your canton. The overview by canton shows the 21 with venues and what stands there, and the list of all venues shows the technology, the bays and the hourly rate where it is published. And if you want to read the federation's figures yourself: the table is on pages 66 to 68 of the annual report, club by club.
