Which club length suits my height? Chart and fitting
A 7-iron is 37 inches long at Ping. Anyone shorter or taller needs less or more: the chart by height, the wrist-to-floor measurement and when a fitting is worth it.

In the fitting chart from Wishon Golf the 7-iron stays at 37 inches, which is 94 cm, for a body height of 170 to 180 cm if the wrist-to-floor measurement is 34 inches. Anyone shorter needs shorter clubs, anyone taller needs longer ones, mostly in steps of half an inch. The wrist-to-floor measurement shifts the values once more, mainly in the lie. This post shows the chart, the standard lengths of Ping's standard and women's lines, and says when a fitting is worth it.
How long is a standard club?
Length is given in inches, and the 7-iron is the yardstick. The standard lengths of the Ping G440 line show how the clubs get shorter from the driver to the wedge (irons, driver, as of 2 October 2026):
| Club | Length in inches | Length in cm |
|---|---|---|
| Driver (G440 MAX) | 46 | 117 |
| 5-iron | 38.5 | 98 |
| 7-iron | 37 | 94 |
| Pitching wedge | 35.5 | 90 |
The word standard needs a footnote. For the driver Ping gives 46 inches with the ALTA CB Blue 50 shaft and 45.5 inches for several other shafts: the standard length depends on the shaft. And Callaway writes that there is no true industry standard for measuring length (Callaway). Since 1 January 2020 Callaway measures by the ground plane method, for new models drivers and fairway woods have since been listed about 1/8 to 1/4 inch longer, and the actual length does not change. So compare lengths only within one brand.
There is an upper limit: a club must be at least 18 inches long and, except for the putter, may measure at most 48 inches, that is 1.219 m (R&A, Equipment Rules). The 46-inch driver is 2 inches below it.
Which length suits my height?
Wishon Golf publishes a chart titled “Height & Wrist to Floor” that gives, for body height and wrist-to-floor measurement, the adjustment of length and lie. I read it on 2 October 2026. It names only the 7-iron, and the file gives no unit for the lie. For a wrist-to-floor measurement of 34 inches (86 cm) the values are:
| Body height | Length adjustment in inches | Length of the 7-iron in inches |
|---|---|---|
| 163 to 165 cm (5'4" to 5'5") | minus 1 | 36 |
| 168 cm (5'6") | minus 0.5 | 36.5 |
| 170 to 180 cm (5'7" to 5'11") | 0 | 37 |
| 183 to 191 cm (6'0" to 6'3") | plus 0.5 | 37.5 |
The adjustment is small. One inch is 2.5 cm, half an inch 1.3 cm. This is the chart of a single provider, and another may draw the limits differently. Take it as a starting value, not as a measure.
Wrist-to-floor measurement: why height alone is not enough
You measure it like this: stand upright, let your arms hang loose, and a second person measures from the floor to the crease of the wrist. In Wishon's chart this measurement mainly changes the lie, the angle of the shaft to the ground. At 175 cm the length of the 7-iron stays at 37 inches whether the wrist-to-floor measurement is 30, 34 or 38 inches, only the lie value moves from minus 4 through 0 to 4. At 183 cm the measurement even decides half an inch of length:
| Body height | Wrist-to-floor measurement | Lie value | Length adjustment in inches | Length of the 7-iron in inches |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 175 cm (5'9") | 30 inches (76 cm) | minus 4 | 0 | 37 |
| 175 cm (5'9") | 34 inches (86 cm) | 0 | 0 | 37 |
| 175 cm (5'9") | 38 inches (97 cm) | 4 | 0 | 37 |
| 183 cm (6'0") | 32.5 inches (83 cm) | minus 1 | 0 | 37 |
| 183 cm (6'0") | 34 inches (86 cm) | 0 | plus 0.5 | 37.5 |
Lie and shaft length are also among the things fitters adjust: Max Lechermann, master fitter at Golfpark Oberkirch, names the adjustment of the lie angle and the shaft length as a lever in GolfPlus from Migros Golf. How grip and lie can be changed is in Changing grips, and what the shaft has to do with your tempo in Regular, stiff or senior.
Men or women: how much shorter is a women's club?
With the G Le4 line Ping builds clubs for women. The comparison with the standard G440 line shows the differences in length (G Le4 irons, G Le4 driver):
| Club | G440 in inches | G Le4 in inches |
|---|---|---|
| Driver | 46 | 45 |
| 6-iron | 37.75 | 37.125 |
| 7-iron | 37 | 36.5 |
| 8-iron | 36.5 | 36 |
| 9-iron | 36 | 35.5 |
| Pitching wedge (at G Le4: W) | 35.5 | 35 |
The driver of the women's line is 1 inch shorter, the 7-iron through the pitching wedge are 0.5 inch shorter, the 6-iron 0.625 inch. Ping builds the G Le4 driver for swing speeds of up to 80 mph. That is the length of a line, not the length of a person: Wishon's chart knows no gender, only body height and wrist-to-floor measurement. The 7-iron of the women's line has 36.5 inches, which is the length Wishon names for 168 cm at a wrist-to-floor measurement of 34 inches.
When is the chart enough, when is a fitting worth it?
The chart works as a starting value for an off-the-rack set. A fitting goes further: the fitter records data with the TrackMan, lets you try clubs and adjusts lie and shaft length (Migros Golf). On the TrackMan he sees clubhead speed, ball speed, carry, spin and launch and landing angle, values that a chart by height does not know. Lechermann says it is never too early for the subject, and that from the start it pays to watch shaft length, flex and grip thickness, otherwise faulty movements and compensations can creep in.
In the directory 24 of the 110 indoor venues list club fitting as a feature (as of 2 October 2026, own entries). What a fitting measures, what it costs and when it pays is in Golf fitting in Switzerland.
What that means for you: two examples
- Measure your body height and the wrist-to-floor measurement.
- Find the row with both values in the chart.
- Add the adjustment to the standard length of the 7-iron, which is 37 inches at Ping.
- Convert to cm, one inch is 2.54 cm.
- Check the result in the simulator or with a fitter.
You are 183 cm tall and measure 34 inches from the floor to the wrist. Wishon names plus 0.5 inch, so a 7-iron of 37.5 inches (95 cm) instead of 37 inches (94 cm). That is 1.3 cm more than the standard length. You are 163 cm tall and also measure 34 inches: minus 1 inch, so 36 inches (91 cm). The standard 7-iron of 37 inches is 2.5 cm longer.
For your first set that means: standard is enough if you sit in the middle of the chart, and you check the length before you buy, above all with used clubs (Used clubs and lake balls). Which clubs you need is in Beginner golf set, what the numbers mean in Club types and numbers explained.

Checking the length in the simulator
On the launch monitor you see how a club flies for you: hit 10 balls with the 7-iron in standard length, and look at how widely they spread and how far apart they land. How to read the values is explained in Understanding launch monitor numbers. Golf simulator for beginners shows the course of the first hour, on the venues page you filter for club fitting, and you find the nearest bay on the map.
Frequently asked questions
Which golf club length suits my height?
In the Wishon Golf chart the 7-iron stays at 37 inches (94 cm) for 170 to 180 cm if the wrist-to-floor measurement is 34 inches. At 163 cm it is minus 1 inch, at 183 to 191 cm plus 0.5 inch. These are guide values from a single provider.
How long is a standard 7-iron?
In Ping's G440 line it is 37 inches, so 94 cm, in the women's G Le4 line 36.5 inches. Standard is up to the maker: Callaway writes that there is no true industry standard for measuring length. So compare lengths within one brand.
How long may a golf club be at most?
Under the R&A Equipment Rules at most 48 inches (1.219 m), except for the putter. The minimum length is 18 inches. A Ping G440 MAX driver with 46 inches is 2 inches below the maximum.
Are women's clubs shorter than men's clubs?
At Ping the women's G Le4 line is shorter: the driver has 45 instead of 46 inches, and the 7-iron through the pitching wedge are 0.5 inch shorter. That holds for this line, not for every woman: Wishon's chart knows only body height and wrist-to-floor measurement.
Do I need a fitting as a beginner?
It is never too early, says master fitter Max Lechermann in GolfPlus from Migros Golf: from the start it pays to watch shaft length, flex and grip thickness. 24 of the 110 indoor venues list club fitting as a feature (as of 2 October 2026).
