Golf glove: which hand, which size and what it costs in Switzerland

The glove belongs on the lead hand. How to measure the size, what Rule 4.3 says and what 86 offers from a Swiss retailer cost, from CHF 14.90 to 69.90.

Golf glove: which hand, which size and what it costs in Switzerland — post image

Right-handers wear the golf glove on the left hand, left-handers on the right. It is always the hand that sits at the top of the grip. This post answers the three questions that come next: how do I find the size, is a glove compulsory, and what does one cost in Switzerland? The prices come from a Swiss retailer, as of 2 October 2026.

Which hand and why

The glove belongs on the lead hand, so on the left for right-handers and on the right for left-handers. The reason is simple: the hands are the only part of the body that touches the club, and anyone who loses the grip loses control (Golf Post). On the lower hand one normally wears none, and a glove on both hands is very rare according to Golf Post.

You play with a glove and mostly putt without. Pros take it off for putting because every layer on the hand reduces feel (Golf Post). What this looks like for left-handers and what to watch for with clubs is in Golf as a left-hander.

Is a glove compulsory?

No. The Rules of Golf allow a plain glove that meets the requirements of the Equipment Rules (Rule 4.3a(5), R&A), and they require one nowhere. What counts as plain is in the Equipment Rules: a plain glove is a fitted covering of the hand with a separate opening for each finger and the thumb. Material may be added for wear resistance, moisture absorption or other functional purposes, as long as it does not exceed the limit for padding. Padding is an area more than 0.635 millimetres (0.025 inches) thicker than the adjacent areas (Equipment Rules, Part 6). Prohibited is a glove that does not meet the requirements, and likewise other equipment that gives an unfair advantage with hand position or grip pressure (Rule 4.3a(5)).

These rules do not apply at the simulator, there you decide yourself. None of the 110 indoor listings in the directory mentions a glove, neither as a requirement nor as a ban. What else you need for your first hour is in The first simulator hour.

Measuring the size

Two measurements decide the size: the hand circumference at the widest part of the palm, directly below the fingers, and the hand length from the wrist crease to the tip of the middle finger (Golf Post, size guide). The tape lies loosely, not tight. The guide's table:

Hand circumference in cmHand length in cmWomenMen
18 to 2017 to 18Snot stated
20 to 2218 to 19MS
22 to 2319LM
23 to 2520 to 21XLL
2621not statedXL

The glove should fit like a second skin. According to the guide the velcro strap covers only about three quarters of its length so that there is still room to move while playing. If you are between two sizes, the guide says to order the smaller one first. And there are two cuts: the normal one for an average hand width and longer fingers and the cadet cut for shorter fingers and broader palms.

Leather, synthetic, rain and winter

TypeProperty according to Golf Post
Leathergood feel like a second skin, water-resistant, stays soft with care, stretches over time
Syntheticvery light, breathable and stretchy, often at the knuckles for flexibility
All-weatherfor wet and warm conditions, better friction in water
Winter and mittenskeep you warm between shots, mittens are not worn while playing

For everyday play on the course one glove in your size is enough. Anyone playing outdoors in winter or in rain has a second one with an all-weather or winter model. What else you need for cold and wet days is in Golf in rain and cold.

When a glove helps and when not

Nike names as advantages more friction between hand and club, so that you hold the grip without too much tension, and technical feedback: where the glove wears shows where the club sits in the hand. Wear in the palm instead of the fingers points to a grip in which the club lies too deep in the palm (Nike). What a grip looks like is shown in How to hold a golf club.

The drawback is the fit. A glove that is too tight restricts the fingers, and one that is too big can let the club slip more than without a glove and cause blisters. According to Nike personal preference decides: if it feels comfortable, wearing it is worth it. The page is a manufacturer's guide, so I took over only the points you can check on your own hand.

Before your first simulator visit

If you go to a bay for the first time, you do not need the glove. You can bring it and notice after a few shots whether it helps you. Many venues provide rental clubs and balls, and the prices for an hour are on golf simulator prices. You find the venue near you via the golf simulator near me page or on the map, and if you wonder whether the simulator suits beginners, golf simulator for beginners answers that.
