How to hit a fairway wood and a hybrid: ball position, angle of attack and tee, with a test

The fairway wood is swept, the hybrid is played like an iron, and both move slightly downward on tour: the ball position, the TrackMan numbers and a test with ten balls.

How to hit a fairway wood and a hybrid: ball position, angle of attack and tee, with a test — post image

You play a fairway wood from the ground with a shallow, sweeping swing, and for a right-hander the ball sits just inside the left heel. You hit a hybrid like a long iron: the same ball position as for a long iron, an iron swing and a small divot after the ball. Both strike the ball slightly downward, just less steeply than an iron. TrackMan measures on the PGA Tour (table of 2019) minus 2.9 degrees with the 3-wood, minus 3.5 degrees with the hybrid and minus 4.3 degrees with the 7-iron. I read the sources on 2 October 2026. At the end there is a test with ten balls for the bay.

Fairway wood or hybrid: two swings, not one

The instructions separate the two clubs clearly. The magazine Golf Monthly writes that a hybrid looks like a small wood, but you set up to the ball as for a long iron, make an iron swing and take a small divot after the ball (Golf Monthly). The fairway wood, by contrast, should sweep the ball off the turf. PGA coach Brendon Elliott writes that fairway woods are built for this, unlike the iron, where a divot may follow the ball (PGA.com). The difference lies in the swing: the wood is swept, the hybrid is played like an iron.

Which of the two belongs in your bag is covered in Iron or hybrid. Which number has which loft is in Club types and numbers explained. Here it is only about the stroke.

What angle of attack do the 3-wood and the hybrid have?

The angle of attack is the direction in which the clubhead moves up or down at the moment of maximum compression (TrackMan). PGA Deutschland calls it the Eintreffwinkel: if the club comes from above, the sign is negative and the angle steep, so the club hits the ball on the downswing (PGA Deutschland). TrackMan writes that shots from the ground, not from a tee, should have a negative angle of attack so that the trajectory is right. For the 3-wood and the hybrid that means slightly downward, but less steep than with an iron. The table shows the PGA Tour average from the TrackMan sheet of 2019 (TrackMan, PGA Tour Averages):

ClubClubhead speed in mphAngle of attackSpin in rpm
Driver113minus 1.3 degrees2,686
3-wood107minus 2.9 degrees3,655
5-wood103minus 3.3 degrees4,350
Hybrid (15 to 18 degrees)100minus 3.5 degrees4,437
5-iron94minus 3.7 degrees5,361
7-iron90minus 4.3 degrees7,097

Two things stand out. The angle of attack gets steeper from club to club, and the spin rises already from the driver to the 3-wood, from 2,686 to 3,655 revolutions per minute. The LPGA Tour swings slower and hits the 3-wood with 90 mph clubhead speed and minus 0.9 degrees, the 5-wood with minus 1.8 degrees and the 7-iron with minus 2.3 degrees. It hits the driver at plus 3.0 degrees (TrackMan, LPGA Tour Averages). There, too, the club moves slightly downward with the 3-wood. Sweeping does not mean hitting upward.

The table is older, and the values change. For the driver TrackMan now gives minus 0.9 degrees instead of minus 1.3 degrees (TrackMan). Take it as an order of magnitude, not as a target.

Where does the ball belong with the fairway wood and the hybrid?

With the fairway wood the ball sits just inside the left heel for a right-hander. According to Golf Monthly this helps to get the shallow angle of attack with which you sweep the ball off the top of the turf. The PGA guide says the same and adds that this position promotes a slightly descending blow. Left-handers mirror it. With the hybrid the ball sits where it sits for the long iron. What that position looks like in detail is shown in Golf setup position.

Two tricks from Golf Monthly come on top. With the fairway wood you grip down two or three centimetres, which brings the ball a little closer to you and gives you more control. And you can imagine the shot below the equator of the ball: you concentrate on a spot low on the ball without taking much of a divot. That flattens the angle of attack without you having to think about technique.

How do I hit a fairway wood and a hybrid off the ground?

With the fairway wood the club should graze the turf but take no real divot, as you would get with an iron (Golf Monthly). More important than the technique is not trying to help the ball into the air. Elliott advises trusting the loft and not lifting the ball by scooping or flipping the wrists (PGA.com). The height comes from the club.

With the hybrid it is different: you swing as with the iron and take a small divot after the ball. If the ball sits in heavy grass, Golf Monthly recommends opening the stance a little and swinging along the line of your feet. That gives the steeper angle you need to get the ball out of the rough. Why low point and strike belong together is in Avoiding fat shots.

Why does my hybrid sometimes fly hard to the left?

One possible reason is a shank. PGA Deutschland describes it like this: if the ball is struck with the inside of the hosel, it flies hard to the left, and this shot often appears with woods or hybrids because they usually have no offset and therefore no hosel set forward (PGA Deutschland). The ball then does not hit the face but the connection to the shaft. So check your distance from the ball. Golf Monthly suggests laying the club down with the end of the grip by your heels and bending from the hips until the back is slightly tilted. As a frequent cause of poor strikes with the fairway wood the same source names a grip that is too tight.

How do I play the 3-wood and the hybrid off the tee?

At the tee you have a choice: the ball may sit on a tee in or on the ground, or on the ground itself (Rule 6.2b, R&A). For the 3-wood a poll of the 100 best teachers of Golf magazine gives about 0.5 inch of tee height, around 13 millimetres, and about 0.25 inch for the iron (golf.com). The driver stands clearly higher at about 1.5 inches, as Driver tee shot for beginners shows.

Off the tee the swing may be a little shallower. Golf Monthly writes that with the fairway wood off a tee you normally want to hit up on the ball a little more than from the ground. The poll gives no figure of its own for the hybrid. Because you play it like an iron, the iron height is a possible start. That is an assumption, and you check it in the test below. This applies as well if you take the 3-wood in your hands for the first time as a beginner: tee and ground are both allowed, and the test shows you what works better for you.

The test in the bay: ten balls, three numbers

The numbers above belong to the tour, not to you. You measure your own in one hour in the bay, if the system shows the angle of attack. In the directory 78 of the 110 indoor venues name TrackMan as their system (as of 2 October 2026, own entries). The procedure: ten balls with the 3-wood off the ground, ten with the hybrid and, if you like, ten with the 3-wood off the tee. After each series note the median of angle of attack, spin and carry, that is the middle value and not the best one. How that works is in Club distances table.

Then you compare. If your 3-wood is steeper than your hybrid, although on the PGA Tour it is the other way round, you are playing it like an iron: try the ball further forward, towards the left heel. What the individual values mean is explained in Understanding launch monitor numbers. If the basic swing is already wobbly, start with Golf swing for beginners.

What this means for you

SituationBallSwing
Fairway wood off the groundjust inside the left heelsweep shallow, hardly any divot
Hybrid off the groundas for the long ironiron swing, small divot after the ball
Hybrid in heavy grassas for the hybrid, stance a little openalong the line of the feet, steeper angle
Fairway wood off the teeon the tee, about 0.5 inch highhit up on it a little more

You take three things with you. You sweep the fairway wood, you play the hybrid like an iron, and both move slightly downward on tour. The ball position is the first screw to turn before you work on the swing. And what is right for you is shown by the angle of attack in the bay, not by the table.

Where you can practise this

81 of the 110 indoor venues in the directory offer coaching (as of 2 October 2026, own entries). You find them under indoor golf training. For the first visit golf simulator for beginners is the way in, the map shows all venues by canton, and golf simulator near me the nearest one.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the ball go with a fairway wood?

For a right-hander just inside the left heel. Golf Monthly names this position so that the angle of attack becomes shallow enough to sweep the ball off the turf. The PGA guide by Brendon Elliott says the same. The hybrid, by contrast, sits like a long iron.

How do I hit a hybrid correctly?

Like a long iron: the same ball position as for the long iron, an iron swing and a small divot after the ball, writes Golf Monthly. On the PGA Tour TrackMan measures an average angle of attack of minus 3.5 degrees with the hybrid, so the club moves slightly downward.

Should I take a divot with the fairway wood?

According to Golf Monthly the club grazes the turf without taking a real divot. That does not mean hitting upward: on the PGA Tour TrackMan measures minus 2.9 degrees with the 3-wood, so the club moves slightly downward there too, just less steeply than with the 7-iron.

How high do you tee the 3-wood?

About 0.5 inch, around 13 millimetres, according to a poll of the 100 best teachers of Golf magazine. For an iron it is about 0.25 inch. At the tee the ball may also be played from the ground without a tee (Rule 6.2b).

Why does my hybrid fly hard to the left?

One possible reason is a shank, a strike with the inside of the hosel. PGA Deutschland writes that the ball then flies hard to the left and that the shot often appears with woods or hybrids because they usually have no offset. Check your distance from the ball.
